A superlative display from Darren Marsden, including a fine hat trick, was overshadowed by Lewisham Borough goal keeper, Kanurasi, who produced a string of superb saves throughout the match.
In the early stages Lewisham matched Bay’s endeavour and in fact had the first goal scoring chance when Allen shaved the outside of the post following a free kick 30yards out.
As the half continued Darren Marsden and Byron Walker started to put the Borough. defence under all sorts of pressure. Both players being thwarted by Kanurasi. Then in the 28th minute, following a quick break out of defence , Neil Perkins’ cross found Marsden in open space on the edge of the area. His first time volley found the top corner leaving the Borough keeper grasping thin air. 1-0
Within a minute Byron Walker, with his first goal of this season, doubled the lead when he ran through the defence and slotted the ball past Kanusari. 2-0
Bay were now in complete control of the game with Joe Nelder, Walker and Marsden all peppering the Lewisham goal but failing to add to the score mainly due to a number of fine saves from Kanurasi in the Lewisham goal.
Several changes were made in the second half including Dan Lawrence for Michael Turner, Shaun Bremner for Jamie Maxted, Sam Baker, and Tom Loynes also came off the bench. This change of personnel made no difference to Bay’s dominance and Lewisham were forced to defend very deep. Their defence was run ragged by Walker and Marsden and it was no surprise when Marsden added to the score when he hit a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the box. 3-0.
On 75 minutes Lewisham must have breathed a sigh of relief when Byron Walker was withdrawn, and replaced by Adam Woolcott. Within a minute though, Marsden completed his hat trick, after waltzing his way through the Lewisham defence before slotting home.
The final 10 minutes resembled something like the Alamo and thanks to further great saves from Kanurasi the visitors came away with a respectable scoreline which really didn’t reflect Bay’s dominance.
